A Beautiful Finish Starts With Proper Preparation

Cabinets and built-ins are used, touched and cleaned regularly, so they need a finish that can stand up to everyday wear. Whether we’re refinishing kitchen cabinets, bathroom cabinetry, shelving or custom built-ins, proper preparation and the right products make a big difference in both the appearance and durability of the finished surface.

Our process includes thoroughly cleaning and preparing the surfaces, making repairs as needed and applying products designed for cabinetry and woodwork. Removable doors and drawer fronts can be taken off for more thorough preparation and finishing, while fixed cabinetry and built-ins are carefully prepared and finished in place.

Taking the time to do each step correctly helps create a smooth, consistent finish that looks great and is made to hold up to everyday use.

Cabinet Painting & Staining FAQ’s

Most cabinet painting projects take about one to two weeks, depending on the number of cabinets, the condition of the existing finish and the type of finish you choose. Drying and curing time between coats also affects the schedule. We’ll give you a more specific timeline based on your kitchen before the project begins.

Proper preparation is one of the most important parts of getting a beautiful, durable cabinet finish. Cabinets are thoroughly cleaned to remove grease and buildup, sanded and repaired as needed before primer and finish coats are applied. Taking the time to prepare everything properly helps the new finish adhere and hold up to everyday use.

Removing doors and drawer fronts allows us to prepare and finish them more thoroughly and create a smoother, more consistent result. Depending on the project, these pieces may be finished off-site in a more controlled environment while the cabinet boxes are prepared and painted in place.

Kitchen cabinets need a finish designed to handle frequent touching, cleaning, moisture and everyday wear. We use products appropriate for cabinetry rather than treating cabinets like ordinary walls. We can also help you choose the color, sheen and finish that works best for your kitchen and how you use it.

Once the finish has fully cured, painted cabinets are relatively easy to maintain. Regularly wipe them down with a soft cloth and mild cleaner, and avoid abrasive scrubbers or harsh cleaners that could scratch or dull the finish. We’ll let you know how long your particular finish should cure and when it’s safe to resume normal cleaning.
