A sealer is designed to protect brick, concrete and other masonry surfaces while allowing their natural appearance and texture to remain visible. A coating creates more of a finished surface and can also be used to change the color or appearance. We can help determine which option makes the most sense based on the surface, its condition and the finished look you want.

How long a sealer lasts depends on the product, the type of surface and how much exposure and wear it receives. Horizontal surfaces such as walkways and patios typically experience more wear than vertical surfaces like brick walls. We can recommend the right product and let you know what to expect for future maintenance.

A masonry sealer can help protect against moisture coming through the exterior surface, but it can’t correct moisture problems originating somewhere else. Plumbing leaks, drainage issues or other sources of water may need to be addressed before the masonry is sealed. We’ll look at the condition of the surface before recommending the best approach.

Minor cracks can often be repaired as part of the preparation process before a sealer or coating is applied. Proper preparation is important because simply applying a product over damaged or loose areas can lead to problems with the finished coating. More significant or structural damage may need to be repaired by the appropriate contractor first.

Dry weather and the right temperatures are important for proper application and curing. Rain and high humidity can affect how some products dry and perform, so we keep an eye on the forecast and schedule exterior masonry work when conditions are appropriate. As with our exterior painting projects, we’d rather wait for the right conditions than compromise the finished result.
