What to Expect From Your Deck Project

A great-looking deck starts with understanding what the wood needs. Before we begin, our crew evaluates the condition of your deck, the existing finish and any areas that may need extra attention. We can also help you determine whether paint, stain or another protective finish makes the most sense for your deck and the look you want.

The process typically begins with cleaning the deck to remove dirt, grime and buildup. From there, we prepare the wood as needed, which may include removing loose or failing finishes, sanding rough areas and addressing minor surface repairs before the new finish is applied.

Once the deck is properly prepared and dry, we apply the selected paint, stain or protective coating, paying careful attention to even coverage and the details around railings, stairs and other areas of the deck.

Throughout the project, we keep the work area organized and clean up at the end of each day. When the job is complete, we clean the area, inspect the finished work and make sure your deck is ready for you to enjoy again.

Deck Painting & Staining FAQ’s

Stain penetrates the wood and allows some or all of the natural grain and texture to remain visible, depending on the type of stain you choose. Paint creates a more solid, opaque finish and gives you more flexibility with color. Both can help protect your deck, but the best choice depends on the condition of the wood, the existing finish and the look you want. We can help you decide which option makes the most sense for your deck.

Preparation depends on the condition of the deck and what has previously been applied. The process may include cleaning, removing loose or failing finishes, sanding rough areas and addressing minor surface repairs. The wood also needs to be properly dry before a new paint or stain is applied.

Drying and curing times vary depending on the product, temperature, humidity and weather conditions. Many deck finishes need at least 24 to 48 hours before normal use, and furniture should not be replaced until the finish has had enough time to cure. We’ll let you know when your deck is ready to use based on the products used for your project.

There isn’t one schedule that works for every deck. How long a finish lasts depends on the product, sun exposure, moisture, foot traffic and the condition of the wood. Horizontal surfaces and heavily used areas generally show wear sooner than railings and other vertical surfaces. We can evaluate the condition of your existing finish and let you know when it’s time for maintenance.

Sometimes, but the existing finish needs to be evaluated first. Peeling, flaking or incompatible coatings may need to be removed or sanded before a new product can be applied. Properly preparing the existing surface helps the new paint or stain adhere evenly and last longer.
