What to Know Before Painting the Interior of Your Home

A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest ways to completely change how a room feels. But getting a great result involves more than choosing a color. The condition of your walls, proper preparation, the type of paint you choose and even the sheen can all make a difference in how the finished room looks and how well it holds up over time.

Randy David Painting has been painting homes throughout Corvallis, Albany and the Mid-Willamette Valley since 1990. Here are a few things we think homeowners should know before starting an interior painting project.

Choosing the Right Paint and Finish

Not every room needs the same type of paint. How a space is used, how much traffic it gets and how often the walls need to be cleaned can all affect which product and finish makes the most sense.

A lower-sheen finish can work well in living rooms, bedrooms and other areas where you want a softer appearance, while more durable, washable finishes are often a better choice for kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and other high-use areas.

We can help you choose a product and finish that works for the room rather than simply using the same paint throughout the entire house.

Don’t Skip the Prep Work

Preparation is one of the most important parts of an interior paint job.

Before painting begins, floors, furniture and other surfaces should be protected. Walls, ceilings and trim also need to be inspected for holes, cracks and other imperfections that may show through the finished paint.

Depending on the condition of the room, preparation may include cleaning, filling holes, drywall repair, sanding, caulking and priming.

It takes a little more time upfront, but good preparation helps create smoother walls, cleaner lines and a finished paint job that looks better.

Choosing a Color You’ll Still Like Next Year

Picking a paint color from a tiny swatch can be surprisingly difficult. The same color can look completely different depending on the amount of natural light in the room, the direction the windows face, artificial lighting, flooring, furniture and the colors surrounding it.

That’s why it’s a good idea to look at paint samples in the actual room before committing to a color. Check them at different times of day and under both natural and artificial light.

If you’re unsure about your choices, we can also talk through color and finish options before painting begins.

What to Expect During Your Interior Painting Project

Having painters working inside your home can feel disruptive, so we try to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Before painting begins, our crew protects the floors, furniture and other areas that aren’t being painted. We prepare the surfaces as needed and then apply the appropriate primer and finish coats for the project.

Throughout the job, we keep the work area organized and clean up at the end of each day. Once the painting is complete, we clean the area and complete a final walkthrough to make sure the details are taken care of.

Whether we’re painting a single room or updating an entire home, the goal is the same: quality work and a finished space you’re happy to live in.

What About Low-VOC Paint?

If you’re concerned about odors or indoor air quality, low- and zero-VOC paints are widely available for many interior applications.

VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, which can be released into the air as paint is applied and dries. Choosing a lower-VOC product can help reduce paint odors and emissions during an interior project.

That doesn’t mean one particular type of paint is right for every room or surface, though. We’ll consider the surface, location and durability requirements when recommending products for your project.
